Hypothyroidism Symptoms: When Tiredness Is Your Thyroid Talking

Hypothyroidism Symptoms: When Tiredness Is Your Thyroid Talking
Table of contents

By 11 am, Meena, 34, is already counting the hours to bedtime.

She sleeps eight hours and wakes up tired. She wears a shawl in rooms where everyone else wants the AC colder. Her hair collects on the pillow. The weighing scale climbs, even though she barely eats lunch.

For a year, everyone has had the same answer: "It's stress. You're a working mother. What did you expect?"

What she expected was to feel like herself. And she was right to.

Hypothyroidism symptoms that get called "just stress"

Your thyroid is a small gland in the front of your neck. Think of it as the regulator on your ceiling fan. It sets the speed for almost everything: energy, warmth, digestion, mood, even hair growth. In hypothyroidism, the regulator slips down to speed 1. The fan still turns. Just slowly.

Thyroid symptoms in women are especially easy to mistake for a busy life:

  • Tiredness: exhaustion that sleep does not fix.
  • Feeling cold: needing a shawl when others are comfortable.
  • Weight gain: the link between thyroid and weight gain is real, as kilos arrive without a change in eating.
  • Hair and skin: hair fall, dry skin, brittle nails.
  • Mood and memory: low mood, slow thinking, forgetfulness.
  • Periods: heavier or irregular cycles in some women.

You are far from alone: a study across eight Indian cities found hypothyroidism in about 1 in 10 adults, more often in women, and many had never been diagnosed.

TSH normal range, made simple

The main test is called TSH. Here is the twist: TSH goes up when your thyroid slows down. It is your brain shouting louder at a gland that is not listening. Labs usually list a normal range on the report, and your doctor will read it alongside a second test called T4.

Thyroid tablet timing: the mistake most people make

The fan still works. It just needs the right speed.

If you are prescribed a thyroid tablet, how you take it matters as much as taking it:

  • Empty stomach: take it with plain water, 30 to 60 minutes before chai or breakfast.
  • Space it out: keep calcium and iron tablets at least four hours away.
  • Every day: same time, no skipped days, and never stop on your own.

Remember Meena's cold chai on the table? Chai or coffee right after the tablet can reduce how much of it your body absorbs.

Selenium for thyroid: what research shows

Your thyroid holds more selenium for its size than almost any other part of the body. In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause of an underactive thyroid, the body's own defences slowly attack the gland. A review of trials found selenium supplements lowered these thyroid antibody levels in people with Hashimoto's. Whether that changes how people feel is still being studied.

Selenium is a mineral where more is not better. Very high doses can cause hair loss and nail changes, so stay within safe daily amounts.

A small daily mineral partner

Balance in you and Daily Boost in you each include 40 mcg of selenium, along with zinc and B vitamins, in one daily drink. It is a gentle daily amount, smaller than the doses used in thyroid antibody studies, and it supports your overall nutrition. It never replaces your thyroid tablet.

Back to 11 am

Four months after her diagnosis, Meena's fan is back at full speed. The shawl stays in the cupboard. At 11 am, she is not counting hours. She is planning her son's birthday party.

"It wasn't just stress," she tells her sister. "It was my thyroid. And now it's handled."

Your one step today: if you have felt tired, cold and foggy for months, ask your doctor for a TSH test this week.
